Day 13Storming into Canada!
... except Great Falls
So then, to Glacier National Park! Somewhere along the way, we stopped by the wayside and there was a STOP sign with bullet-holes in it! But the view towards the Rocky Mountains was spectacular!
Inside the Park, we stopped off at St Mary's and then drove by St Mary's Lake, which was a beautiful turquoise colour in the sunshine - and then we drove as far as the Logan Pass, on the Going to the Sun Road. It was quite something - although the higher we got, the less I was willing to look! There were some pretty high drops up there! We could see though, that the dark clouds weren't far away, so we drove back down and had a look around the Visitor Centre. There was a telescope there, which looked directly into an osprey's nest!
But the thunder storm caught up with us fast, and by the time we reached the border at Chief Mountain, we could hardly see a thing and the thunder and lightning crackled all around us! Really not the ideal weather for driving over mountains in a strange country! The border guard tried cracking a few jokes, but all I was concerned about what the lightning! As we entered Canada, we almost ran over a cow, who looked nearly as distressed as we were! It wasn't far to Waterton National Park though - and by the time we reached there, the storm was almost past, and we were greeted by deer, roaming the streets!
Our accommodation was fine. A cabin with a main room, with 2 beds and a kitchen, a bathroom and a separate bedroom with 1 queen bed. We voted the hub had that room! Just across from the cabin was a Subway and lots of shops! So we went out to explore! We walked down by the lake and then around the town. It was very pleasant indeed, apart from a very cold wind. We bought a chicken for our collection, a totem pole and a FLEECE (at last) for the hub, although he wasn't all that happy with the bright yellow lining!
I later phoned Heather (from a callbox; our room phone wouldn't let us use our phone-card!) - to let her know that we were in the country! Then we watched the TV, before an earlyish night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
