Day 114th July Celebrations!
We had problems finding a parking place, but eventually we found one, and found ourselves a spot, where we stood for a couple of hours, watching the parade go by! It was quite an experience! We enjoyed it very much indeed! Here's a flavour:
We then returned to our cabin, phoned Dad and then walked up to the Old Trail Town, which was just behind Cody Cowboy Village. This was a great place! All the old cabins were authentic ones, and most, if not all, held special interest, especially for those who loved their 'cowboys'! There was a cabin where the Hole in the Wall Gang had made plans for something or other, Mud Spring Cabin, which Kid Curry and the Sundance Kid had used as a hideout before a bank hold-up, blacksmith's shops, schools, homestead cabins - and a saloon. Great stuff! As well as the cabins, there were the grave sites of buffalo hunters and trappers - and, none other than Jeremiah Johnson! Before leaving, we bought a print of an indian hunting a buffalo.
Then we returned to our cabin to watch the first half of Italy v Germany, which finished 0-0. We then drove to the Subway; got ourselves some sandwiches, and returned to the cabin for the second half! Italy won the game, 2-0, with two late goals in extra time.
Then we got ready for the rodeo, which started at 5:30pm. Although it would've been possible to have walked, we decided to drive the short distance, as it was very hot. It was a great experience to be at such an event, even although the benches were very hard and everybody seemed to have brought along their own cushions or pillows! The best I could do was to buy a blanket to sit on! The show started with the National Anthem, "We might not all be in agreement about our involvement in Iraq, but we are all patriots". Then we had the horse saddling, and the bare-back riding and the races and the bull riding. Two and a half hours of it! I can't say that I understood everything that went on - certainly I didn't understand the scoring system - but 85 seemed to be a reasonable score, which called for lots of cheering! The popcorn wasn't much good - rather salty, I thought - I like mine covered in caramel!! Oh and Peekaboo Street was there!!!! An enjoyable time and a privilege to have been involved in the Independence Day celebrations.
There was still more to come though - the fireworks display! We watched it from just behind the Village - and it was good, although nothing remarkable. All in all, it had been quite a day!
