A friend of mine once suggested that he was in complete control of me. That I was just a brain in a jar and that he was simulating my life by applying electrical impulses to my nerve endings. (Therefore I was perfectly safe). How does he know, however, that he is not just a brain in a jar, which I am simulating and thus making him think that he is simulating my life? Perhaps somebody else is simulating both our lives.
This is an extreme example, of course (though a favourite with philisophers). There are not many people who would believe that nothing exists outside of their own minds - although, that is certainly all we can be sure of. This is a scary concept, if we think about it. How DO we know that anything else outside of our mind really does exist? On top of that, if our senses tell us that there is an external world outside of our mind, how do we know that others taste things; see things; smell things. The same as us? How about an orange? Is what we see as the colour "orange" the same thing as others see? How does our taste of "sour" compare? (CONTINUE AND AMEND THIS RUBBISH!!! Oranges aren't SOUR!)
(Minds separate from brains?)(Souls)(MIND, BODY & SOUL). TO BE CONTINUED)
