USA 2004 Planned Itinerary
Days 1-4. Pheonix and White Mountain
Interactive Map of the American Southwest
Interactive Map of Arizona
| DAY 1
Drive from Plymouth to Heathrow. Stay overnight in the Sheraton Skyline Hotel*. 15 nights car-parking included. (Pay the extra 3 nights directly with hotel).
|
| DAY 2
Transfer to Heathrow T1, 2 and 3 and then take the Heathrow Express to Terminal 4. We are booked into the Holideck from 9.40am.
| British Airways Flight: BA 289. Departs Heathrow: 12:40. Arrives Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: 15:35. (Blisteringly hot afternoon, when our heads say 'getting on for midnight'.*) | |
|
| Take a taxi or shuttle the 8 miles to the (Marriott) Camelback Inn*, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, where we have a casita booked for 2 nights - special deal with 2 breakfasts, in-room movie and popcorn! Maybe get something quick to eat from Hoppin' Jack's. Stay awake as long as possible! | |
|

| DAY 3
After breakfast (in the Navajo Restaurant), we have to pick up the hire car from Dollar and then we can do what we like!! But we should, some time during the day, Head Out On The Highway - Looking For Adventure!!! Of course, we should try to see something of Phoenix* itself - and other possibilities include , Mystery Castle* - there is such a nice story attached to it - and Rawhide*, which won't be open until the evening probably. Otherwise, there's Scottsdale itself to have a look around - and a drive (or hike?) up Mummy Mountain (right beside the hotel) is considered interesting - lots of posh houses! Also, possible, Buffalo Museum of America(!) |
|
|
| DAY 4
We'll leave the Camelback Inn after breakfast, to drive, firstly, through Tempe and then Mesa, to Apache Junction. It would be nice to take in a little of The Apache Trail*, though I rather doubt we'll have time - as we have to get to Superior before 2pm, or the World's Smallest Museum will be shut!! This, of course, is the home of Apache Leap Mountain and apache tears. Then it's through Globe and up over the mountains and some cooler temperatures! We might manage to turn off for a gander at Fort Apache
| We will drive as far as Pinetop-Lakeside and we're booked in for the night at the Best Western Inn of Pinetop. We wanted a cabin in the pines, but, unfortunately, it's Labor Day weekend, and, quite understandably, they all wanted a minimum of 3 nights rental. The Whispering Pines Resort* (right next door to the BW) have invited me to ask again, nearer the time - so I will! Also possibly worth checking up on nearer the time, are Moonridge Lodge, The Place Resort, the Northwood Resort, Heaven Scent Cabins (Greer?) and Sargent's Cabins (Greer) (and another, which has deck hot tubs, but I can't find it). | |
